What does your “free” time look like?
For most people, this time includes staring at a TV or spending money in a mall, restaurant, or a host of other places.
While these activities are fun every once in awhile, making them a habit can waste our time and money on things that don’t fulfill us.
Time Magazine estimates that the average Netflix subscriber spends 1 hour and 33 minutes streaming TV every day.
That’s 42 hours a month sitting on the couch staring at a screen.
Now think about the typical weekend for many college age and working class people.
They get off of school or work and go hit the bars for weekly binge drinking sessions.
Not only does this hurt your health, it can drain your wallet.
Just think, if you bought an average of 5 drinks each Friday and Saturday night for a year, you would have spent close to $2500. That’s a lot of money that you could have saved for something more fulfilling, like travel!
Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with enjoying the occasional movie or night out on the town. But if you want to get ahead in life, keep an eye on where most of your time and money goes.
What’s the point of working so hard for our money if we’re going to blow it on items that don’t give us lasting happiness or enjoyment in life?
What you do with your spare time can make or break your success… and your bank.
The next time you find yourself bored, resist staring at your phone and try one of the activities below.
Happier people know that experiences are more fulfilling than items. You would be surprised how much more joy you get from seeing a new city than from buying the newest iPhone.
What actually brings you joy?
For me, things that bring real happiness are having meaningful conversations and expanding my mind and body.
